Edmund Debenham migration to Australia

Information supplied by Lenore Lindbeck nee Debenham September 1995

  • Edmund born 1833 in Harlston, Norfolk, England and died 1920 Coffs Harbour NSW aged 83
  • Edmund had been at sea with the East India Company, had yellow fever in China and advised by Dr. Robert Debenham to come to Australia.
  • Edmund came to Australia approx 1850 aged 17
  • Edmund visited the Debenham’s at Forbes and then joining the North Coast Steamship Company as engine man.
  • Edmund married Jane Fisher Parkins whose family had come from Mudgee to Armidale and hence to Frederickton whey they had established a store.
  • Edmund and his friend Rowe decided to stay in Frederickton and marry the two Parkins sisters.
  • There is also a record of Edmund travelling on the steamship “Telegraph” from Brisbane to Sydney 4th August 1860
